2 Days in Pondicherry: A Simple Itinerary from AVS Guest House

AVS Guest House Puducherry, a base for a two-day Pondicherry itinerary

Pondicherry rewards slow travel. The town centre is small, the seafront is walkable and the best moments are early mornings and late evenings, when the heat is off and the Promenade is closed to traffic. This is the plan we hand to guests who ask "what should we do in two days?" It is built around our location in Pattanur, and it leaves the hottest hours free for a shower and a rest.

Getting around from Pattanur

AVS Guest House is about 5 km from the beachfront, a 15-minute drive. Autos are easy to find on the main road; agree the fare before you get in. For two full days, a rented scooter is the cheapest option and parking in White Town is straightforward before 10 AM. If you would rather not ride, we can arrange a cab for the day on request. Ask at the desk the evening before.

Day 1: The town

6:30 AM – Promenade Beach. The 1.5 km seafront is closed to vehicles in the early morning. Walk from the Gandhi statue past the old lighthouse and the French war memorial while the town is still waking up. This is the best hour of the day.

8:30 AM – Breakfast in White Town. The cafés in the French Quarter open around 8. A filter coffee and a croissant on Rue Romain Rolland or Rue Dumas is the classic Pondicherry breakfast, and the streets are quiet enough to photograph.

10:00 AM – Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The main building on Rue de la Marine, where the Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother is, is open to visitors from 8:00 to 11:30 AM and 2:00 to 6:00 PM. Entry is free. It is a place of silence: phones off, no photography, and give yourself at least half an hour.

11:00 AM – Manakula Vinayagar Temple. A few streets from the ashram. Remove footwear at the entrance. The lane outside sells good fresh fruit and flowers.

12:30 PM – Lunch and a rest. Eat in town or head back to the guest house to escape the afternoon heat. Room service runs from 6 AM to 11 PM if you would rather eat in.

4:30 PM – Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Botanical Garden. Both are near the railway station and both are more pleasant once the sun drops.

6:30 PM – Sunset on the Promenade. The road closes to traffic again in the evening. Dinner options range from street food near the pier to French restaurants in White Town, and the walk back along the seafront after dinner is worth the extra half hour.

Day 2: Beaches and Auroville

8:00 AM – Paradise Beach. Drive 7 km south to Chunnambar Boat House, where a short ferry ride across the backwater takes you to Paradise Beach. The ferry runs from 9 AM to 4 PM and the return ticket is roughly ₹300 to ₹350 per adult, with a small entry fee for the boat house itself. The beach is clean, has lifeguards and a few shacks. Go early; it fills up by 10:30.

11:30 AM – Back to the guest house. Shower, lunch and rest through the hottest hours. There is no prize for sightseeing at 1 PM in Pondicherry.

2:30 PM – Auroville. About 14 km north, 25 minutes by road. Start at the Visitor Centre, watch the short introduction film and collect a free pass to walk to the Matrimandir viewing point. Passes are issued until 4 PM (1 PM on Sundays), so do not leave this too late. Our separate Auroville day trip guide covers the pass rules in detail.

5:30 PM – Serenity Beach. On the way back, stop at Serenity Beach in Kottakuppam for sunset with the fishing boats. Then dinner in town or back at the guest house.

If you have a third day

Two half-days work well: Goubert Market in the morning, then Ousteri Lake on the western edge of town in the late afternoon, which is on the same side as Pattanur. Or simply repeat the Promenade at dawn. Most guests say it is the thing they remember.

Where to stay

For a two-night trip we suggest the AC Standard Room: you will come back hot in the afternoons and the tariff keeps the budget sensible. If the room is part of the holiday, the Deluxe AC Room with a king bed and rainfall shower is the upgrade. Staying in Pattanur also keeps Auroville, JIPMER and the beach all within a short drive while costing far less than a room in White Town; we compare the two areas honestly in Pattanur vs White Town.

Book by phone on +91 81100 83151 or through the contact page. Check-in is from 12 noon, check-out by 11 AM, and parking is free on site.
