Auroville Day Trip from AVS Guest House: Passes, Timings and What to Expect

Auroville is the excursion our guests ask about most, and the one they most often get slightly wrong. People arrive at 4:30 PM to find the passes have stopped, or expect to walk into the Matrimandir on the day. This guide is what we tell people at the desk, written down.

What Auroville is

Auroville was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, known as the Mother, the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo. It was conceived as a township where people from every country could live together beyond nationality and creed. Today it is a living community spread across a wooded plateau north of Puducherry, with residents from dozens of countries, its own farms, schools and workshops, and at its centre the golden Matrimandir, the most photographed structure in the region.

It is not a theme park and not a temple. It is a place people live in, and it is best enjoyed at a walking pace with that in mind.

Distance and how to get there

From AVS Guest House in Pattanur, the Auroville Visitor Centre is about 14 km, roughly 25 minutes by road. Three ways to do it:

• Cab for half a day. The simplest option. Ask our front desk the evening before and we will arrange it.
• Scooter. The route via the East Coast Road is straightforward and parking at the Visitor Centre is free. Carry your licence.
• Auto. Possible, but fix a return fare before you leave. Autos are scarce inside Auroville and you do not want to be looking for one at 4 PM.

Visitor Centre first, always

Everything starts at the Visitor Centre, which is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Inside there is an exhibition on the history of the township, a short introductory film, cafés, and shops selling Auroville's own products: incense, handmade paper, pottery, clothing and skincare. This is also the only place to collect a pass for the Matrimandir.

Seeing the Matrimandir

There are two levels of access, and they are very different.

The viewing point

This is what almost every day visitor does. Collect a free pass at the Visitor Centre after watching the short film, then walk about ten minutes along a partly shaded path to the viewing point, where you see the Matrimandir and its gardens from across the lawn. The viewing point is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, but note the pass counter closes earlier: passes are issued Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM, and on Sundays from 9 AM to 1 PM. A free electric shuttle runs for visitors who find the walk difficult.

The inner chamber

Going inside the Matrimandir for concentration in the inner chamber is a separate process. It is not a same-day activity. You must first visit the viewing point, then book a slot at the Visitor Centre at least three days ahead. The inner chamber is closed on Tuesdays and Sundays, and on your booked day you report at 8:30 AM. Plan for it only if you are staying several nights in Puducherry, and treat it as a quiet, meditative visit rather than a sightseeing stop.

What to wear and bring

• Modest, light clothing. The walk is in the open and Auroville is a community, not a beach.
• Water and a hat. Shade is limited between 11 AM and 3 PM.
• Some cash. The Visitor Centre shops take cards, but smaller stalls on the surrounding roads often do not.
• Comfortable footwear. Auroville is spread out and you will walk more than you expect.

Food and shopping

The Visitor Centre cafés serve simple vegetarian meals, good bread and coffee. Outside the township, the road through Kuilapalayam has a string of small restaurants and bakeries popular with residents, and it is a good place for lunch on the way back. The shops at the Visitor Centre are the easiest place to pick up Auroville-made gifts; prices are fixed.

A suggested timing

Leave the guest house by 8:30 AM, reach the Visitor Centre by 9:00 as the doors open, watch the film, walk to the viewing point before it gets hot, then browse the shops and have an early lunch. You will be back at AVS by 2 PM for a rest. If you prefer an afternoon visit, leave by 2 PM and collect your pass well before the 4 PM cut-off, then stop at Serenity Beach in Kottakuppam for sunset on the way back. Stay close, spend less

Staying in Pattanur keeps Auroville, JIPMER and the beach all within a short drive while costing far less than a room in White Town.
