Most of the guests who come to us because of JIPMER are not tourists. They are families accompanying a patient, sometimes for a single consultation, often for a week or more of tests, treatment and follow-ups. This guide answers the questions we hear at the front desk every day: how far the hospital is, when to leave in the morning, what the room includes, and what to bring.

How far is AVS Guest House from JIPMER?

AVS Guest House is in Pattanur, about 4 km from JIPMER Hospital. In normal traffic that is a 12-minute drive by auto or car. Puducherry Railway Station is 6 km away, and the beachfront and Sri Aurobindo Ashram are about 5 km in the other direction, so you are close to the hospital without being in the crowd right at its gate.

We chose this location on purpose. Lodges at the hospital gate fill up fast and stay noisy late into the night. Pattanur is a quiet residential area, and you still reach the OPD in a quarter of an hour.

JIPMER OPD timings to plan around

A few things worth knowing before your first morning:

  • OPD registration runs Monday to Saturday, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Queues build early, so most of our guests leave the guest house by 7:30 AM on their first day.
  • First-time patients go through the Screening OPD, which works on a walk-in basis from 8:30 AM. The registration token costs ₹10.
  • Online appointments are available for many departments through the JIPMER patient portal. Booking ahead can save you a full morning in the queue, especially for follow-up visits.
  • Visiting hours for admitted patients are set ward by ward. Check the notice board on the ward on your first day and plan meals around it.

Our front desk is open 24 hours. An early departure, a late return after an evening procedure, or a midnight call from the ward are all normal here, and there is always someone at the desk.

Which room should you book?

For a stay of more than two or three nights, especially with an elderly family member, most guests choose the AC Standard Room. Puducherry is warm and humid for most of the year, and a good night's sleep matters more than usual when your days are spent in hospital corridors.

If you are travelling on a tight budget, the Non-AC Standard Room has a high-speed ceiling fan, the same queen bed and the same attached bathroom with hot water. Between December and February it is comfortable for almost everyone.

Every room includes:

  • Attached bathroom with 24/7 hot water
  • Free high-speed WiFi (useful for sending reports to a doctor back home)
  • Colour TV, wardrobe and a small study table
  • Daily housekeeping and fresh linen
  • Power backup, so a night-time cut does not wake anyone

Tariffs are per room per night, so two attendants can share a room at no extra cost. An extra bed can be added on request for a small charge if a third person is staying. Read our guide on choosing between AC and Non-AC rooms if you are unsure which to take.

Getting to and from the hospital

  • Auto-rickshaw: the easiest option. Autos are available on the main road outside, and the front desk can call one for you at any hour. Agree the fare before you get in.
  • Own vehicle: parking at the guest house is free, on the premises and covered by CCTV. JIPMER has paid parking inside the campus.
  • Arriving by train: Puducherry station is 6 km from us. Tell us your train time and we can arrange a pickup for a nominal charge; please give us at least four hours' notice.
  • Arriving from Chennai: buses from Chennai stop at the Puducherry New Bus Stand. From there it is a short auto ride to Pattanur.

Food, medicines and daily needs

Room service runs from 6 AM to 11 PM, so a simple South Indian breakfast before an early OPD visit, or a late dinner after a long day, is a phone call away. Breakfast is not included in the tariff; it is charged per order.

Pharmacies and small grocery shops are within a short walk on the main road, and the front desk can point you to the nearest one that stays open late. For anything specialised, the pharmacies around the JIPMER campus stock most prescriptions written inside the hospital.

We provide mineral water in every room and hot water for a flask at any hour. Ask at the desk.

What to pack for a hospital stay

  1. All previous prescriptions, reports and scans in one folder, with photocopies of the important ones.
  2. The patient's ID proof and any referral letter. JIPMER asks for these at registration.
  3. A power bank and a long phone cable. Waiting areas have few sockets and a lot of waiting.
  4. Light cotton clothes and comfortable footwear. Hospital corridors are warm and you will walk a lot.
  5. A small flask, a light shawl for air-conditioned waiting halls, and a notebook for doctors' instructions.
  6. Enough cash for autos, tokens and small purchases. We accept UPI and cards at the guest house, but not every shop near the hospital does.

Booking for a longer stay

If you expect to stay a week or more, call us before booking so we can hold the same room for the whole duration and talk through a rate for the longer stay. It also helps us to know in advance if you need an early check-in on arrival day; check-in is normally from 12 noon and check-out is by 11 AM, but we adjust where we can.

Reach the front desk on +91 81100 83151 (WhatsApp works on the same number) or send a message through our contact page. You can also see all rooms and tariffs before you decide.

We know these are difficult trips. Our team has been hosting JIPMER families since 2010, and we will do what we can to make the stay simple.
